First and only edition of this uncommon early pamphlet on the American space programme for high school and university science teachers, published only five years after the establishment of NASA.
The seven talks published here were presented at the 1963 summer meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers. The contributors include Homer E. Newell, a mathematics teacher and rocketry specialist who played an important behind-the-scenes role in establishing NASA and became one of its highest-ranking administrators; John E. Naugle, a rocket scientist who served in numerous administrative capacities at NASA headquarters and eventually became chief scientist; Oran W. Nicks, research engineer and later the director of Lunar Planetary Programs, who oversaw the Mariner missions; and Urner Liddel, who served as the chief scientist of the Lunar Planetary Program for five years. Among the topics discussed are the philosophy and goals of NASA’s space science program; co-operation with universities and opportunities for students and research funding; the scientific goals and technical challenges of various NASA programmes, and physics, geophysics, and biology in space science.
