Michelet, Jules

The Bird

  • A beautiful later printing of this work on birds by the French historian Jules Michelet, originally published in France as L'Oiseau in 1856, and first published in English in 1869. Michelet approaches the study of birds not as a naturalist, but with sentimentality and the eye of a philosopher. The book is composed of short essays and poetry on different aspects of bird life, such as flight, finding food, and nesting. It is also copiously illustrated with elaborate steel engravings of a variety of bird species. An unusual and charming volume that would make a nice gift for a bird lover.
