A charming advertising booklet for pet bird products produced by The Nature Friend Inc. of New York City.
Author Joseph P. Leindorf, who is pictured on the title page with birds on his hands and shoulders (probably taxidermied specimens), was almost certainly the owner of the company. The 1940 census records that he was born in Hungary in 1873 and by 1940 was a naturalised citizen living in the Bronx (in the same neighbourhood as the address given in the pamphlet, 1840 Boone Ave) with his wife Teresa. In addition to selling bird products he held at least ten US patents, most for bird accessories such as perches, but also for medicated shoe insoles and a shoe drying attachment.
The Nature Friend line included a variety of products, including Magic Song Restorer, which “contains the most expensive ingredients of any health food”, Magic Fat-Ree-Dew-Sir, Magic Albumenized Fruit, Magic Life Saver (”medicated with a bird tonic”), Magic Bird Wash, and Magic Bird Spray. It seems that he also sold aquarium products, as the last page advertises his “most authentic breeding book on tropical fish”.
