Upcoming Events: Firsts - London's Rare Book Fair & The York Antiquarian Book Seminar
We're proud to be exhibiting on stand P11 at Firsts, Londons premiere rare book event. The Fair is one of the world’s largest independent marketplaces for rare and out-of-print books, with more than 150 international exhibitors offering unique and unusual works including signed first editions, maps, manuscripts, art and ephemera.
This year Firsts will be opened by actor and book collector Stephen Fry, and visitors will have the chance to view a copy of Shakespeare's First Folio along with other historic books and stage props from Shakespeare's Globe.

The History of Printed Nature Books

Firsts has an excellent schedule of guided tours, demonstrations, and talks. This year, Alembic founder Laura Massey is hosting a tour on the history of printed nature books, from late-medieval herbals to Enlightenment natural history, the Victorian colour printing revolution, and the rise of photographic guides.

Are you interested in learning more about the rare book trade from some of the best booksellers in the UK? The York Antiquarian Book Seminar is a three-day course (September 9th through 11th) in which leading specialists share their knowledge of both traditional and modern aspects of bookselling. The seminar is designed for people of all levels of experience, from beginners to professionals who want to hone their skills. Alembic founder Laura Massey is honoured to have been chosen as this year's specialist dealer, and will be giving a talk on her experience in the trade.
A number of scholarships are still available for those wishing to attend:
The Belle da Costa Greene Scholarship covers the course fees and four nights accommodation for a bookseller or librarian from a historically underrepresented community, including those who identify as BAME, LGBTQ+, working class, persons with disabilities, or other self-identified communities who might benefit from this scholarship. The application deadline is Friday, May 31st - see the link above for full details.
The PBFA is offering two scholarships covering course fees for current PBFA members, or a would-be PBFA members who potentially fulfil the requirements for PBFA membership. (Any bookseller may apply to the PBFA if they have been trading for two years and can provide the names of two existing Full Members of the organisation who know them, have traded with them for at least two years, and are willing to sponsor their application).
